𝗢𝗕𝗔𝗠 𝗖𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗣𝗘 𝗛𝗢𝗡𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗦 𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗙 𝗜𝗗𝗢𝗠𝗜, 𝗢𝗕𝗢𝗟 𝗜𝗕𝗢𝗥 𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗜
Today, the 12th day of October, 2024, marks a historical day in the land of Idomi. Today happens to be the Obam of the immediate past King of Idomi, in person of Obol Ibor Eteng Iferi, who went to be with his ancestors, sometimes in 2023. Suffice to say that his ascension paved way for the descension of the incumbent King, in person of His Royal Highness, Obol Ofem Inah Edet.
Obol Ibor Eteng Iferi is the 13th King of Idomi who took after Late King Mbeh Ottoh Ujong in 2013. His reign was short one as he ruled from 2013 to 2023, when he went to be with his ancestors due to some stubborn and unyielding ailment.
As tradition demands, when an Obam member or a king/prime ministers of the land goes to join their ancestors, a date will be fixed in a douce manner, between the members cum senate of the troupe, otherwise known as Ekarum, and the family of the deceased, to make plans on how to carry out the status quo of the Obam War Dance.
The late king of the land isn't an exception as the members and administrative board of Obam deemed it fit to honor him, as their norms and ethics. Another importance or significance of rallying with Oham/masquerade, is to traditionally bid him farewell and also call on our forefathers to perpetually guide, guard and see his spirit through to the other side of the world.
Apparently, today's Obam took a different dimension as our kiths and kins from Ojor (the ancestral home of the Yakurr people) came in their numbers to grace the occasion, as it is supposed to be. Upon their arrival , they were well received, recognized and appreciated for setting aside their tight and busy schedules, just to make sure the commemoration of our past King is noticed and revered.
Not just Ojor, our brothers and sisters who are from other communities like Ugep, Mkpani, Nko, etc, came down to witness this historic event and pay their last respect to the late King of Idomi, in a traditional way.
Summarily, the Obam commemoration comes whenever they lose a member to the cold hands of death and to them, it is their special and traditional way of honouring and bidding the deceased farewell. It ended in joy and harmony as the entire Ilomi rallied with the masquerades (Eblami) till they folded up the event at the King's residence. Once again, may the soul of our Late King rest in the bosom of his maker. Amen.
